volunteering tips

You are happy to volunteer for your project because you have fun and conviction. However, sometimes volunteering is not that easy. We have put together a few tips here on how you can optimize your volunteer work:

Because the voluntary commitment, in addition to the support and assistance, should also correspond to your ideas and wishes, do not be afraid to formulate these clearly to the organization.
Arrange a trial phase in which you have the opportunity to get to know the field of work, the team of colleagues and the working atmosphere.

Ask for a specific description of the task , preferably in writing. This makes it easier for you to familiarize yourself with the job and to complete your tasks, and is also a good basis for discussions with those responsible at the facility.
Make sure that there is a permanent contact person for you who will introduce you and accompany you during the deployment.

Ask for regular staff interviews . There are many topics, e.g. observations, suggestions, satisfaction with the completion of tasks, etc ...
Do not be afraid to ask for an expense allowance if, for example, travel expenses and / or telephone costs arise during your work.
Be reliable and fair towards the facility, stick to agreements and let them know in good time if you are prevented and cannot come.

Would you like to do something useful in your free time? Are you looking for a commitment that suits you and is also fun and enjoyable for you?

The following four questions will help you to find the right activity and the appropriate form for your commitment. Try it!

1. How much time can and do you want to invest?
There are very different forms of voluntary work that involve different amounts of time:

a short-term engagement in a time-limited project, in a time-limited campaign
a long-term engagement in an "honorary position", eg as a board member, as a representative for a field of activity, as a treasurer, as a PC expert
in a continuous collaboration in a group, an association, an organization
in a "voluntary service" for a few months or for a whole year
You have to be clear about which type of engagement corresponds to your wishes and your current life situation.

Voluntary services (such as a voluntary social year or the new federal voluntary service) are mostly "full-time services". There are exceptions with the new Federal Volunteer Service (BFD). At the BFD, people over the age of 27 can work part-time (at least 20 hours per week). Further information and links on the subject of voluntary services can be found on our page "The most popular voluntary services at a glance" .

2. Where can you get involved?

The next step is that you decide what you would like to do. Civic engagement is possible in very different areas of life and areas of application. Take a look at the variety of topics and engagement areas in our  volunteer exchange for the Tübingen district  .

3. How do I get in contact?
The next question is how you can actually get in contact with a group, an association or a project?

The first thing to do here is our volunteer exchange, in which you will find a variety of volunteering offers from associations and organizations in the Tübingen district.

However, for various reasons, not all addresses of groups and associations in your city or municipality can be listed in our volunteer exchange. If you cannot find what you are looking for in our database, you have further options:

In many places there are contact points where you can get very specific information about volunteering opportunities.

Volunteer agencies provide addresses and have an overview of who is needed or sought for what and where. In the city of Tübingen, for example, you can contact BüroAktiv .

The district seniors' council informs and advises older people who want to get involved after their professional or family phase.

4. What else do I have to consider?
Am I insured during my engagement? Can my commitment to the application folder be certified? Can I get my expenses reimbursed? Can my involvement have tax implications?

If you are interested, they also ask about further training and further education opportunities.
Make sure you have liability and accident insurance at the establishment.
At the end of your voluntary activity, you have this confirmed in writing with the type, scope and duration. The proof may be helpful for later (professional) activities.
